The California Black Rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus) is a tiny, elusive marsh bird and an endangered subspecies, whose presence in Baja California, Mexico remains poorly understood due to scarce data and increasing threats from habitat loss and development.
In 2023–2024, we confirmed 46 individuals across two key wetlands—Estero de Punta Banda and Bahía de San Quintín—and our ongoing project is working to fill critical knowledge gaps, monitor habitats, and develop science-based conservation strategies.
Your donation helps us:
• Conduct long-term acoustic monitoring using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs)
• Assess wetland health using the California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM)
• Engage local communities in conservation education and stewardship
• Develop a conservation and management plan based on science and community input
This work is a collaborative effort between NGOs, research institutions, and local communities, and aims to ensure the long-term survival of the Black Rail and its wetland habitats.
